Do you suggest beginning with a basic panel system and swapping out the distance logic group with the sun system file?

The first thing to do would be to find the component that is generating the final "value" set in the sun system. It will be a list of numbers near the end of the definition that is controlling the gradient display.
You will then need to match that list up with the variable that is controlling the panel…. Getting a matching list is the tricky part…
For exercise two are we supposed to run our final model through an energy modeling software such as ecotect? or just grassohopper/rhino?
If you want to got the extra mile and use analysis software to control geometry, you are certainly welcome to do that…
but otherwise you can just use the Grasshopper sun system provided in class…. Fundamentally, this is a list matching exercise.
For Ecotect, you will need to use a custom scripting component to get Grasshopper to read an excel spreadsheet (with analysis results)…. a quick search for "excel" at the Grasshopper website will put you on the right path.
